18 December 2008 – Freedom International announces 3rd-party independent lab results proving the FREEDOM ONE waterless car wash product is “readily biodegradable”. “We are the first waterless car wash product company to have conclusive results proving how “green” and “biodegradable” our products are,” said David Elliott.

In this assay, rapid biodegradation of reference and test materials was observed. Analysis suggests that the product contains 1.25% carbon. Therefore, we may assume that if the carbon is mineralized, the entire product should be considered biodegradable. The “ten day window” for OECD biodegradation evaluation started on Day zero. Based on CO 2production, the reference material was at least 73% (±3) degraded within ten days, confirming that the assay was a valid measure of biodegradation. The test material was at least 57% (±1) degraded within ten days, and 68% (±4) within 29 days. While this is slightly below the OECD cutoff, the loss of DOC suggests that loss of carbon to cell material was about 20% for the reference material and 10% for the test material. If these figures are used to correct the CO2 data, one can conclude that the test material was approximately 63% degraded in ten days, and 75% degraded in 29 days. From the degradation curve, an apparent half-life of 12.3 days can be calculated.
Under the conditions of this model system, a greater than 99% biodegradation can be expected in 82 days.
The sum of the data suggests that the test material exceeds the threshold to meet the OECD definitions of “biodegradable,” and “readily biodegradable.”
However, while these assays are commonly used to evaluate mixed products, they are designed for pure substances. The results should be interpreted in conjunction with the actual product formulation.
